When people from Nebraska leave the state to take a vacation, what do they see?

Brief Astronomy lesson What are your ideas about the size of the universe?

Why does the earth look flat? How big is the earth? How many humans could lay head-to-foot around the equator of the earth? 21,896,000 people

If the earth was shrunk to a ball that was 4 miles in diameter how big would the people be? .0364 inches or 1/27th of an inch

Are humans running out of space on the earth? If there are 6.5 billion people on earth. If each person needs 2 square feet of space. The square would be 21.7 miles on each side.

How big is the earth compared to the sun? The diameter of the sun is about 110 times the diameter of the earth. How much distance is between objects in space?

It takes light about 1.28 seconds to reach the moon. The sun is about 93 million miles from the earth. It takes light about 8.3 minutes to reach the earth.

Light from the closest star to the sun takes 4 years to reach us. This distance is also called 4 light-years. Our galaxy has a diameter such that light takes about 100,000 years to cover this distance (100,000 light-years). There are probably over 200 billion stars in our galaxy. The diameter of the universe is at least 93 billion light years.

Luke 12: 7Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Luke 12: 29-31 your Father knows that you need them. 31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. John 10: 14 I know my sheep and my sheep know me

Are you humbled to the point of self-pity?

V5 God has given us a high position. We are valuable in his site.

Psalm 8:4-6 is quoted in Hebrews 2:6-8 and applied to Jesus.

Read Psalm 8 verses 6-9 V6 We were created with a purpose. Do we think about what God has given us? How are we using what God has given us?

When people from Nebraska leave the state to take a vacation, what do they see?

mountains, ocean, lakes, forests, parks, etc. …. the outdoors, God’s creation

(Although Nebraska has good places to visit too.)

Brief Astronomy lesson

What are your ideas about the size of the universe?

Why does the earth look flat?

Humans are very small compared to the size of the earth.

How big is the earth? The rounded off height for a person is about 6 feet. The distance to the center of the earth is about 3,960 miles. If we dug a hole to the center of the earth and stacked 6-foot people head-to-toe in that hole, there would be about 3,480,000 people in the hole.

How many humans could lay head-to-foot around the equator of the earth?

Let each person be 6 feet tall. Earth radius is about 3960 miles.

Circumference is 2*pi*r or about 24,881 miles or 131,374,000 feet

Divide by 6 = 21,896,000 people laying down head-to-foot

Or Nebraska is about 430 miles long so about 58 Nebraskas would fit end to end around the equator

Or Fremont is about 4 miles across. If the earth was shrunk to a ball that was 4 miles in diameter how big would the people be? 4 mi/ 7920 = X / 6 feet

X = 0.00303 feet or .0364 inches or 1/27th of an inch

Are humans running out of space on the earth? What is the approximate minimum amount of area needed for all of the humans on the earth to stand in one place? Suppose that there are 6.5 billion people on earth. Suppose that each person needs 2 square feet of space. The area needed would be 13 billion square feet. If the area is a square it would be 114,000 feet on one side, or 21.7 miles on each side. That is a lot less than the area of one state.

The earth is big compared to a person!

How big is the earth compared to the sun?

The mass of the sun is about 330,000 times the mass of the earth.

The diameter of the sun is about 110 times the diameter of the earth.

Bring two objects that have this ratio of size. Or, use the diameter of the circle of chairs in the class as the sun and find an object that has a diameter 1/100th of the diameter of the circle.

How much distance is between objects in space?

The moon is about 230,000 miles from the earth. Center to center

It takes light about 1.28 seconds to reach the moon (Recall delays in Apollo radio transmissions.) The sun is about 93 million miles from the earth. It takes light about 8.3 minutes to reach the earth.

The Voyager spacecraft was launched in 1977. Voyager 1 is now 100 times farther from the sun than the distance from the sun to earth (100A.U.) It is twice as far from the sun as Pluto is from the sun. Radio signals to Voyager take about 830 minutes, 13.4 hours to travel one way.

Light from the closest star to the sun takes 4 years to reach us. This distance is also called 4 light-years. Our galaxy has a diameter such that light takes about 100,000 years to cover this distance (100,000 light-years). There are probably over 200 billion stars in our galaxy. If the Milky Way galaxy was reduced to the size of Nebraska, our solar system would be about ˝ inch in size. When you look at the Milky Way from a dark, country location you are seeing stars perhaps to about 1/10th of the distance to the center of the galaxy.

The diameter of the universe is at least 93 billion light years.

Read Psalm 8 verses 1-5

V1 Why is God’s name majestic in all the earth?

How does God’s glory compare to the glory of the universe?

Greater, God created the universe

Read Job 36:22-26 24 Remember to extol his work,   which men have praised in song.  25 All mankind has seen it;   men gaze on it from afar.  26 How great is God—beyond our understanding!    The number of his years is past finding out.

Later, read Job 38

V2 How do children and infants praise God?

Simple faith, wonder … Matthew 21:15,16 the children shouting in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," …  "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read,  " 'From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise'?"

1 Corinthians 1:26-31 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him.

v3 Think about God’s creation.

V4 What reaction do you have to this verse?

How is God mindful of us?

Luke 12: 7Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered

Luke 12: 29-31 your Father knows that you need them. 31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

John 10: 14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me

Are you humbled to the point of self-pity? No, see verse 5

God decided to create us and reveal himself to us.

V5 God has given us a high position. We are valuable in his site.

Psalm 8:4-6 is quoted in Hebrews 2:6-8 and applied to Jesus.

Read verses 6-9 V6 We were created with a purpose.

Do we think about what God has given us?

How are we using what God has given us?

Genesis 1:26-28 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

V9 How does this Psalm help you praise God?

Isaiah 43:6,7 Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth-  7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."

Ephesians 1:11,12 11… having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
